Japan is blessed with some of the world's best skiing, and famed for reliable powder snow. Combine perfect snow, relaxing hot spring onsens, tantalising food washed down with warm sake or a cold Sapporo, with the amazing cultural intrigues of Japan, and it's easy to see why so many travellers return time and again.

Enjoy your holiday at one of Japan's famous, yet affordable, ski resorts, or combine with a personalised trip around Japan to make the most of your trip. Our Asia Travel experts can organise everything from start to end, including flights, or simply your snow resort experience. Suggested Itinerary

Shiga Kogen on the island of Honshu is situated in the heart of the Joshinetsu National Park in Nagano Prefecture. The resort consists of 19 separate ski areas which make up the largest ski resort in all of Asia when combined. With 980 metres of vertical terrain and the longest run being 6km Shiga Kogen provides a great variety of on and off piste skiing for all levels. There's no main village or town in Shiga Kogen, but the small groups of hotels around the ski fields make Shiga Kogen a true ski in - ski out destination. The three main areas are Ichinose, Giant and Sun Valley, Ichinose being the largest. There are around 20 hotels here as well as some bars and restaurants. Giant and Sun Valley also have a small number of hotels.

All these areas have limited night time activity so if après ski is high on your agenda this may not be the destination for you. As Shiga Kogen has the highest ski resort in Japan, the season is long and the snow quality is high, the powder here can rival Hokkaido’s best. Conditions are great from mid December through to late March in most seasons. Ichinose is open until early May and powder days in April are not uncommon.

All the reports are included in the Super Pass and you can ski or board from area to area or use the resort shuttle bus with your valid Super Pass.
