Suggested Itinerary

Day 1: Paro / Thimphu

On arrival you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel in Thimphu. After you have rested and had lunch in the hotel or local restaurant you will explore the city of Thimphu.

Thimphu is a bustling town on the banks of the Thimphu Chhu and set gloriously in the hills of the Thimphu valley. It is home to the Bhutanese Royal Family, the Royal Government to several foreign missions and development projects. Thimphu is one of the few capital cities in the world that has no MacDonald, star bucks, billboards and traffic lights. A must see city that has truly set an example. It is also a place for trekking, bicycling, motor biking and bird watching.

Visit the National Memorial Chorten, National Library, Institute for Zorig Chusum (Painting school), Tashichhodzong (Fortress of the glorious religion which houses some ministries, the King’s secretariat, and a central group of monks)

Day 2: Punakha

Drive to a vantage point above the city towards a tiny zoo to be amused by the sight of Takin, the national animal of the Druk Kingdom, one of the strangest creature as you’ll ever see – an interesting blend of a goat and cattle. Then head further to a nunnery, Drubthob Lhakhang. En route, you can admire a fascinating sight of the city from high above. Visit to the local vegetable market on return to the city centre.

After lunch you head to Punakha via the famous Dochula pass. Again, the mountain views are spectacular and worth its journey alone. Your afternoon activity will include a leisure walk to the temple of the Divine Madman- Chimi Lhakhang. The walk takes you through the farmlands and past the farmhouses to a hill with commanding views of the river valley below. A stop by a farmhouse gives you an introduction to the typical farm life in Bhutan.

Punakha narrates lots on the histories of Bhutan. It served as the capital of the country from 1637 to 1907 and the first national assembly was hosted here in 1953. It is home to the second oldest and second largest dzong in Bhutan and one of the most majestic structures in the country. On October 13, 2011, the wedding of the 5th King of Bhutan, was held at the Punakha Dzong. This place boasts of low altitude trek, rafting, kayaks, camping, bicycling and bird watching.

Day 3: Paro

In the morning you will make your way to Yambesa, just a short drive from Punakha. Drop off at a parking lot by the Mo Chhu River and hike through a beautiful pastoral setting to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten. This impressive 30m tall chorten, dedicated to protector deities, is perched high on the hill with the bird’s eye view of the valley below.

After lunch visit Punakha Dzong, the religious and administrative centre of the region. Return drive to Paro.

Day 4: Paro

Hike up to the famed Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's nest), an iconic Bhutanese landmark. The upward climb will take around 2 hours and stunning views compensate for the energy expended. Midway on the descent, you will enjoy lunch at the terraces of a Government run cafeteria facing the Tiger’s Nest. In the afternoon visit to the Drukgyel Dzong, Rinpung Dzong & Ta Dzong.

Day 5: Paro

Enjoy the morning free at leisure until your departure transfer for your onward flight.
